Whatever industry you work in, you are protected by employment law. This provides you with certain rights, regardless of what your contract may say.

In the UK there has been a sharp rise in the number of employees taking their employer to court and being awarded compensation. To help manage this, UK employment law has been tightened so there is a universal standard which all employees can expect. An employer cannot omit certain statutory rights from your contract, but they can increase your rights further.
Your contract should contain the following basic statutory rights:
• The right to a written statement of terms of employment within two months of commencing work
• The right to an itemised pay slip
• The right to receive the National Minimum Wage (at least)
• The right not to have illegal deductions made
• For full time employees, the right to at least four weeks paid holiday every year
• The right to time off for trade union duties
• For employees with more than two years of service, the right to paid time off work if you are being made redundant
• For 16 and 17 year olds, the right to have time off to study
• The right to paid time off for ante natal care
• The right to paid maternity leave
• The right to paid paternity leave
• The right to paid adoption leave
• The right to request flexible working arrangements to care for dependent children or adults
• The right to unpaid parental leave (for men and women)
• The right to work no more than 48 hours per week (due to Health and Safety regulations)
• The right to weekly and daily rest breaks
• The right not to be discriminated against
• The right to continue working until the age of 65 at least
• The right to a notice of dismissal
• The right to written reasons of dismissal
• The right to receive compensation if unfairly dismissed
• The right to claim redundancy pay
• The right not to suffer detriment or dismissal for blowing the whistle on a matter of public concern at a workplace
• For part time workers, the right to the same contractual rights as a comparable full time employee
• For fixed term employees, the right to have the same contractual rights as a comparable permanent employee.
These rights apply for the majority of workers regardless of how many hours per week they are contracted to work. However in some cases, a minimum period of employment must be completed first.
